i'm not ready. grabbed a neocities domain for a gimmick site i want to make but don't have the energy or motivation to fuck with it right now. i hope the official export tool gets released soon so it'll be easier for me to repost things painlessly.
i am basically holding out hope that the export feature isn't vaporous because i have too many posts to trawl through manually (at least right now--i've only saved what is obviously good and the 2024 archives for Cohost Union News) and i don't have the technological competency needed to use cohost-dl
oh yeah for sure cohost-dl goes way into the weeds and there were a lot of extra steps to take to get it running, the creator made a guide for how to get it running on windows. make sure you are swapped into the blog you are trying to back up at the time and remember to edit the config file for every blog swap (don't be me, the Certified Computer Dumbass™ who forgot to do it and then couldn't figure out why the thing wasn't doing the thing at first).
i'm hoping the official exporter will be a little more user friendly if/when it comes to fruition
Being very tech UNsavy, I didn't know if I could figure out how to make cohost-dl work (currently getting my butt kicked by trying to set up a Linux distro), but the guide is actually pretty good and the only trouble I had was that it didn't specify if you have a space anywhere in the path that cohost-dl is in, when it asks you to paste that path into powershell you have to put it in "quotes".
Alternate problem cropping up however is that as it runs I'm beginning to worry about hard drive space. How on earth was I so active on cohost for the 11 months I was there for it to result in a 10+ GB download? I guess it's because I liked a lot of posts so it's grabbing all the images from them.
Doing pretty alright. I think it is definitely going to hit me harder once Oct 1 arrives and the site goes quiet for good. But I definitely stopped checking it as often as I used to, and I think I've found decent spaces to do my posting in the meantime.
It is not the first community space I've had to leave, nor will it be the last. And I'll eventually figure out my digital life in the post-cohost world.
